Durango Mountain got about 9 inches of fresh powder this weekend and looks like we could have a little more accumulation today! There is still plenty of time to get some great sking and snowboarding in this winter season! There is currently a 72 inch base at Purgatory just waiting for you! But remember spring is just around the corner so you better get here quick! Purgatory is planning on staying open through the month of March seven days a week at the regular hours of 9 am - 4 pm and starting Friday April 2, they will only be open Friday through Sunday from 10 am - 5 pm. Since the snow has been great this year they are planning on being able to stay open throughout the entire month of April, but that will depend on the weather of course.

This April we also have the Durango Meltdown to look forward to! April 16 - 18 Durango will host a fun bluegrass festival to get everyone excited about spring and the melting of the Durango snow! Meltdown is always a fun event that you are not going to want to miss! Make sure you book your accommodations today and join us!

Snowstorm Blows in 23 More Inches Into Durango!

This weekend Durango got hit with a big snowstorm bringing 23 inches to Durango Mountain Resort! There is great powder on the mountain for all you skiers and snowboarders out there! Also for those of you who love adventure and may want to try something different, you should try snowmobiling! Outlaw Tours has a great Durango Train and Snowmobile Tour that would be perfect to try this weekend for the ultimate in winter fun! Your adventure will start at 9:30am, with a historical train ride to Cascade Canyon on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Durango Mountain has been seeing plenty of snow over the past couple of weeks but its been quite sunny in Downtown Durango lately and its looking like sunny skies in the forecast for the rest of the week. There is a possibility of snow flurries into the weekend but the weather looks quite pleasant for this week. This could be how Durango has earned the #1 ranking in North America for winter weather! Rockies.com writes an article on Durango Mountain Resort and why we all love the skiing there. They highlight how the resort gets over 260 inches of snow annually and a lot of that at night helping it to the top of the winter weather list. They also note that the grooming at Durango Mountain Resort is some of the best in Colorado. Overall there is 1,325 acres to ski at Durango Mountain Resort, which has a base elevation of 8,793 feet and a peak of 10,822 feet.

Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort is happy to currently have a 62 inch base and plenty of skiers and snowboarders on the mountain. SheRide is a one of a kind snowboard camp for women, hosted and created by women. The camp is held February 5, 6 and 7 at Durango Mountain Resort. SheRide welcomes all levels, from the first time beginner all the way to the advanced rider. Campers say this camp is like no other! "Our team does everything we can to jump in and get to know you from the start. Our top priority is helping you to meet your goals and have a fantastic time. We're happiest when you're happy! "

This great camp includes 3 days of riding, learning and laughing, a SheRide T-shirt, video analysis and a celebration dinner and raffle. Campers are videoed during the weekend and have the opportunity to review the footage with the coaches. They can analyze your movement to help show you what you are learning. They help you understand your gear, make adjustments, and fit you so that you're the most comfortable. SheRide also has a photographer come and take group photos and individual action shots.

Durango, Colorado is an amazing place to spend your Valentine's Day. Weather you're visiting from out of town for a romantic weekend getaway in the mountains or a local enjoying your hometown scenery there is plenty of Valentine's Day fun for all!

For those of you looking for a relaxing Valentine's day weekend there are plenty of beautiful accommodations such as cabins, lodges and resorts for you to escape to. There also are some fun events going on this weekend for those of you who would love to get out on the town and even take a train ride through the mountains. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad have a special Valentine's day Train Ride called "Romance on the Rails Valentine Train." This ride will be leaving the station at 1:30p.m. and returning at 6:30. This will be special, romantic evening and dinner on a memorable ride through the San Juan Mountains.

Although these are great for those who have a Valentine to spend this evening with, but for those who may not, there are still some fun things you can do this Valentine's weekend! There is a Valentine's Day 5K for anyone who would like to participate. The race is Valentine's Day at 10 a.m. starting at the Durango Community Recreation Center Amphitheater. The snow is coming down here in Durango! In the past 72 hours 43 inches have accumulated and a whopping 25 inches of that have been in the past 24 hours and it is still coming down! We are so happy to see so much snow, we haven't seen much over the past couple weeks so Purgatory Mountain is very happy to get fresh powder on the slopes! Durango Mountain Resort is so excited about all this snow they are even running some specials so make sure you check those out before heading out to the slopes! This has hugely increased their 35 inch base as of last week to a current 70 inch base. So if you're in the area get out there and play in the snow this weekend!

Also, all this snow is just in time for the annual Durango Snowdown, the 32nd annual premier winter celebration! The kickoff for the 2010 Snowdown, "Life's a Beach" will be this upcoming Wednesday January 27th and the festivities will continue through the 31st. There will be PLENTY of fun activities and events to participate in for all ages! So grab those swim trunks and bikinis and come on out to the 32nd annual Snowdown! Why? Cause "Life's a Beach!"

Southwest Colorado Chapter of the American Red Cross Provides Relief in Haiti

The Southwest Colorado Chapter of the American Red Cross is joining the effort to raise $1 million for earthquake relief in Haiti. “We've been swamped with calls from people who want to know what they can do," chapter Executive Director Cindi Shank said. “It's Durango, so people are wonderful and want to step up whether it's our community or internationally." Shank asked people not to offer food or clothing because there is no way to send the items to Haiti. Monetary donations can be converted to hard goods, she said.

In addition to the fund drive, the Red Cross has made all relief supplies in its warehouse in Panama available for the effort. The warehouse can meet the basic needs - such things as food, clothing, water and mosquito netting - of 5,000 families, Shank said.

Monetary donations to earthquake relief in Haiti may be made online at www.coloradoredcross.org/haiti or mailed or delivered to the Southwest Colorado Chapter of the American Red Cross office at 1911 Main Ave., Suite 282, Durango, CO 81301, with "Haiti" on the memo line.

Looks like it's about time for Mother nature to freshen up the slopes with some new powder! We haven't been seeing too much new snow in Durango the entire month of January but it is in the upcoming forecast. Currently there is snow developing and it should be snowing on and off throughout the next week. We know Durango Mountain Resort is excited about the fresh power that will be nicely improving their slopes along with adding to their current 35 inch base. This also means there will be fresh snow just in time for the 2010 Snowdown festivities!

The upcoming 2010 Snowdown, "Life's a Beach," looks like it is going to be a blast! From January 27th through the 31st Durango will no longer be the southwestern Colorado town its known for, it will morph into a tropical paradise all in the name of the annual Durango Snowdown. There are always so many fun events to participate in and this year they have added 25 brand new events! Anywhere from oyster eating contests to the "Beachin Bull Bash" to a Spamcastle building contest, the new events will be nothing short of fun! Looks like the snowstorms are over in Durango, but don't worry, there is still plenty of snow! Durango's Snowdown 2010, Life's a Beach!

Snowdown is Durango's annual Winter Celebration. A costume party, parade and annually changing theme makes this event one of a kind. Previous themes include Snowdown in Da Nile, an Egyptian themed Snowdown, and A Jolly Roger Snowdown, a pirate themed Snowdown party. The upcoming theme for the 2010 Snowdown is "Life's a Beach," so start getting your costumes ready as the Snowdown kick-off party is on January 27, 2010 and the celebration continues until the 31st. There will be a golf tournament, "Outlaw Josie Pete's Golf Tournament," on the 30th for all those golfers out there! The deadline to register is January 13th, so get those entry forms mailed by the 10th to make sure you can play!

Durango Woman Puts Her Talent for Sewing to Great Use This Christmas

91 year old Dorris Higgins has been through a lot over her lifetime and still finds the time and sees the importance to help those in need. She has an amazing talent for sewing and a huge passion for helping those in need. As a retired seamstress in Durango, CO, she works year-round making around 60 dresses and 25 totebags for Operation Christmas Child. Higgins is a firm believer in keeping busy with the activities she enjoys most. Every fall she donates her hand-sewn dresses and tote bags to be included in some of the gift-filled shoe boxes packed by members of the First United Methodist Church in Durango. Last year the congregation, along with area-churches, packed some 3,200 shoe boxes with toys, necessity items, school supplies, candy and hand-written notes of encouragement.

"I think about these little girls when I am sewing dresses and how little they have and how much they will enjoy something new," said Higgins who has been a member of the Methodist church for 76 years. "While I am making them I am praying that they can make a difference in somebody's life."

Operation Christmas Child is a project of the international relief and evangelism organization Samaritan's Purse, headed by Franklin Graham. The thousands of boxes packed by Higgins and other members of the First United Methodist Church in Durango will contribute to Operation Christmas Child's 2009 goal to collect and deliver some 8 million gift-filled shoe boxes to children in more than 100 countries. Operation Christmas Child, the world's largest Christmas project, encourages volunteers to fill simple shoe box gifts with toys, necessity items, school supplies, candy and hand-written notes of encouragement. The gifts are then hand-delivered to children worldwide who are suffering because of natural disaster, disease, war, terrorism, famine and poverty.

For many of these children, the shoe box gift will be the first gift they have ever received, letting them know they are loved and not forgotten. Currently there is just a light snow, but we are expected to get anywhere from 6-12 inches over the next 2 days. Then, the forecast for Friday through the weekend is sunny. You know what that means! After the first snowstorm of the season the Durango snow has not slowed down! After the 24 inch snowfall over the weekend, Purgatory now has a 43 inch base and is opening more and more runs everyday. Beginning last Friday, December 11, Purgatory is now open for daily operations. Purgatory will also be hosting their first ever "Locals Day" on December 20th, for all locals to come out and ski on a discounted lift ticket where a portion of the proceeds to benefit KSUT and Manna Soup Kitchen.

Also new for this year, Buck’s Livery will offer nightly sleigh rides from Purgatory’s base area. Sleighs will depart the base area at 5, 6 and 7 p.m., and each sleigh holds a maximum of six people. Guests can purchase tickets for a 45-minute tour around the mountain or special packages which include a sleigh ride and dinner at Purgy’s or a romantic sleigh ride and fondue for two. Reservations are strongly recommended, you can make these by calling 970-385-2110.
