Southern Ute Pow Wow
The Grand Entry of the Pow Wow is regal promenade in which hundreds of elders, dancers, and drummers enter these hallowed grounds in the most captivating, swirling, jingling spectacle with flashes vibrant colors. The Grand Entry is such a crowd pleaser that it repeats three times: Friday at 7:00 pm., Saturday at 1:00 pm. and again Saturday at 7:00 pm.
The drumming gets deep into your soul and the aroma of sage and sweetgrass transports your spirit to a time when the Ute tribe presided over this area for thousands of years. The ancient sounds of chanting and drumming tap into your mystical side.
This is your chance to discover little-known secrets and traditions of the Sky Ute tribe as you watch numerous contests. Over $50,000 will be paid out to contest winners in numerous categories such as: Women's Jingle Dress, Teen Girls Fancy Shawl, Men's Chicken Dance, Teen Boys Grass Dance. Gourd dancing and drumming competitions are wildly popular and a “must see” on your list.
An event with high attendance is the rodeo. What a truly American amalgam occurs when you witness Ute participants displaying traditional southwestern ranching and rodeo techniques...everything from saddle bronc riding to traditional steer roping.
Local vendors are on hand to provide you with hundreds of sweet and savory food choices. You can purchase some of the the finest bead work, jewelry, and art. Marvel at the array of costumes that are hand-stitched by tribal ancestors. And yes...by all means...invest in a good jingle dress (pictured below.) You just never know when the inspiration will strike you to perform your best jingle dance. Anytime is a good time to reminisce about the beautiful Ute Pow Pow and contemplate America's cultural heritage.
