Fall Foliage in Durango, Colorado

Fall has arrived here in Durango! Since Durango is in the lower elevations we're just now starting to see the beautiful golden aspens that the higher elevations such as Silverton and Lake City have been seeing for a few weeks now.  The forest service is reporting that Durango and the Purgatory area is just now seeing about 15% of our expected fall foliage.  While other close by areas are now at a much higher percentage.  Molas Pass is at 50% and Silverton has almost peaked at 95%.  The areas in the San Juans with the greatest amount of color and the suggested viewing areas are Silverton and above to Lake City and these areas are all expected to peak this week sometime.

Ready for the fall foliage now? Since Durango doesn't have too much color at the moment try taking a day trip over to Silverton to view the beautiful colors.  The drive will be spectacular and you can spend a fun day or evening enjoying Silverton.  Of course riding the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad will also be a great way to view the fall colors while experiencing one of Durango's most popular attractions. You also might want to try driving the "Most Beautiful Drive in America" this fall season.  The San Juan Skyway loops through the beautiful San Juan Mountains and through the San Juan, Uncompahgre, Wilson and Sneffels mountain ranges. The route passes through the towns of Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Ridgway, Telluride, Rico, Dolores, Cortez and Mancos. It's a 236-mile route, but that's a road trip you will never forget!
