Feature Friday - Colorado Trails Ranch

Today's Feature Friday is Colorado Trails Ranch, a very fun dude ranch in Durango.  General Manager, Jeanne, who has been with Colorado Trails since 1966 has taken the time to answer our five Feature Friday questions.

1. A dude ranch is a very unique way to experience Durango.  Tell us a little about the ranch and what to expect when staying at Colorado Trails Ranch.

A vacation at Colorado Trails Ranch is like a cruise on horseback or special camp for families. Our guests all arrive on Sunday and progress through the week, departing the following Sunday. We have a wide variety of activities to keep everyone happy and busy….or just relaxing. It is an all-inclusive vacation with accommodations, meals, virtually all the activities and the gratuity included. My staff and I  feel as though our guests are actually guests in our home with lots of things to do, day and night. Our guests can expect to enjoy superb food, make wonderful friends and enjoy a huge variety of activities (such as horseback riding, fly fishing, shooting sports, full children’s program, swimming, hiking, rafting and so on) all with spectacular Colorado and the San Juan National Forest in the background.

2. What are the most popular activities at Colorado Trails?

Aside from the fantastic meals, horseback riding is probably the most popular. The most lasting memories from a stay at Colorado Trails are the lasting friendships formed between the guests and the bonding of the staff.

3. When you get a chance to enjoy Durango outside of the ranch what do you like to do?

Our guests get an opportunity to go to the Melodrama and raft, plus we also offer a guided trip to Mesa Verde National Park.

4.  Since dude ranches are seasonal vacation destinations in Colorado what happens on the off season?

During the off season, we shut the ranch down as it is not winterized, and take the opportunity to get some building projects done. Our horses get some rest and relaxation. We spend the winter communicating with prospective guests for the following season and spend a lot of time carefully hiring our staff. We look for those who feel just right for our ranch and way of life.

5.  What do you think is Durango's best kept secret?

While Durango is growing and changing, it still has the small town feel. I am always amazed at how many wonderful restaurants there are in  Durango.
