4th of July in Durango

The day will kick off with Rotary’s All-American Gourmet Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at Rotary Park. Following breakfast will be the Freedom 5K run/walk hosted by parks and recreation at 9 a.m. Next we'll move to Buckley Park to listen the Fort Lewis College-sponsored reading of the Declaration of Independence at 11. Later, at noon, a series of three live bands, jazz, bluegrass and country will play until 5 p.m. Also at noon, the Kids Flea Market hosted by Wells Fargo Bank will be open to all children who want to sell their treasures along with lots of fun children’s activities in the park. Refreshments will be sold from the Coca-Cola trailer and a small beer garden on 12th Street and Main Avenue.
As far as food goes, there will not be any food vendors so we encourage the tradition of the family picnic basket. You can either order a box lunch from one of the downtown restaurants or pack a picnic basket of your own. It is suggested you bring your own blanket for your picnic in the park. Please note that Buckley Park is a Durango School District 9-R property and state law prohibits alcohol and tobacco from the official picnic basket list of “goodies.” Park Ranger Yogi and Boo Boo will be present to confiscate picnic baskets in violation of park rules.
Finally, take a walk down Main for the Stars and Stripes Parade at 6 pm. If you're interested in being part of the parade please note that the event is free, the theme is Red, White and Blue and you can call 375-5067 to sign up. Before and after the parade, enjoy three hours of the Street Dance on the 800 block featuring popular county rock band the High Rollers. Then at about 9:15 pm, the traditional fireworks Salute to America will be held over downtown.

We were lucky enough to be in Durango 5 years ago during the 4th of July and participated in all of the activities. We loved the small town atmosphere and listening to the Dec. of Independence in the park then all the live music and topped off with a satisfying display of fire works over the river which were easy to see from the lawn of the Wells Fargo bank. We will be attending this year's 4th of July festivities again and we are really looking forward to the event. Durango always makes us feel welcomed and it is our city of choice to cool the desert heat of Phoenix from our bones.
