Always...Patsy Cline at the Durango Arts Center

Not surprisingly, Always…Patsy Cline’s solid appeal comes from the music – 27 of Cline’s hits. Songs such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walkin’ After Midnight spin a tribute to the legendary country singer – a poor girl from small-town Virginia who started on Arthur Godfrey’s radio show, was a star at 28 and dead at age 30. Cline is still regarded by many as the top female country singer ever. Her acclaimed career lasted barely five years; she cut only three albums. Ten years after her death, she became the first female solo artist to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Based on a true story, the revue centers on Patsy’s friendship with Louise Seger, a Houston fan who befriended the star in 1961. Although they only met once, the two corresponded often, their letters revealing details of their lives and the pain that apparently backed up the emotion in most of Cline’s heart-felt ballads. The play’s title comes from the closing in all of Patsy’s letters to Louise, Love always, Patsy Cline.
