Wolf Creek Lands on the New York Times Ski Guide

The New York Times recently wrote a Ski Guide for 2010, and placed Colorado's Wolf Creek on the guide under "Affordable Skiing."  They point out how great the skiing is for such a great price!  Most Colorado ski areas are so nice you have to spend a fortune to take a skiing vacation.  Luckily for those on a budget, Colorado has Wolf Creek, which has great skiing and gets some of the heaviest snowfall in the state.  Although you are not going to find all the great resort amenities at Wolf Creek such as electronic ticketing or fancy lodges, but you will be able to ski for cheap at this "charmingly retro alternative."  Lift tickets are a whopping $52 and ski rentals are only $14.

The biggest expense you will have in traveling to Wolf Creek will be getting there.  The closest airport to Wolf Creek would be the Durango La-Plata County Airport which is about 80 miles west. They service three routes: Frontier and United from Denver and US Airways from Phoenix. As far as where to stay, the nearest lodging is going to be in the small town of South Fork, 18 miles east of Wolf Creek. But Pagosa Springs, in the other direction, has more restaurants and other amenities.

Wolf Creek is in rural southwestern Colorado, and reaching there may be the biggest expense. A rental car is required to get around Pagosa Springs, the quiet town where most of the hotels are situated.

I made it to Wolf Creek from San Diego in just over half a day. It's basically the same amount of time as driving from home to Mammoth Mountain, but the skiing in Colorado is far superior. The lift tickets are less expensive too!

The Wolf Creek's ski area is a beautiful place with seven lifts service incredibly beautiful terrain, over 1,600 acres. The Magic Carpet is a moving conveyor lift for the Wolf Pup Program. The Nova Lift services beginner terrain for children and new skiers. The Water Fall area is beautiful and adventuresome; full of incredible glades and changing terrain. Predominately tree skiing and boarding.
