Farmers Market to Open Saturday

It's that time again for the Durango Farmers Market to begin its summer season this Saturday.

There is a little change this year, however. The market is migrating south from its winter space at the Smiley Building back to the First National Bank parking lot. It will be open from 8 a.m to noon every Saturday through Oct. 31.

There will be several new produce vendors this year.

The early-season markets may include potted plant starts, jams and preserves, spring greens, honey, cheeses, meats, baked goods and eggs. Three "Iron Chef" events are planned for July 25, Aug. 15, and Sept. 5. Local chefs will purchase and prepare food at the market in the friendly competition.

The Wednesday Durango Farmers Market will continue this year, but it's location has changed as well. The mid-week markets, which will run from July 1 through Sept. 16, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. in the front parking lot at the La Plata County Fairgrounds.

The Wednesday Durango Farmers Market market is a great venue for beginning growers. There also are "incubator booths" available at the market for backyard growers who have an excess crop to sell. These vendors don't need a business license, but they do pay taxes. They can sell their produce at the market twice, as long as they live within the five-county radius around Durango.
